Facebook accused for failing to keep privacy promises
Federal Trade Commission before a certain time accused Facebook of mismanagement of its users data. These includes changing to the policy terms without users knowledge, forwarding data to advertisers without the express confirmation of those whose data were shared, and even after the user turns off his account, his photographs and data remain available (stored on the servers). Facebook has acknowledged "his mistakes" and decided to make agreement. For the first time we can say that the social network giant was "stepped on" because of its relationship to the scheduled user privacy.
The settlement means that Facebook:
- Do not present on wrong way the privacy and security data on network
- It must required from user approval of any changes of Privacy that is taken
- Prevent access to the user whose account has been turned off within 30 days
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive privacy program and that within 180 days, and for every two years in the next two decades, provide independent review of its policy to comply with the obligations prescribed by the Federal Trade Commission.
For each violation, Facebook will pay a penalty of $ 16,000 per day. However, compared to the time when objections were originally sent to Facebook, privacy settings are changed in a positive direction, and with this decision, analysts say, will have perhaps the greatest significant message that is sent to all other social networks, which will now know that if they do not comply guaranteed regulation will be in similar situation.
Having published the news of the agreement, on the official Facebook blog is "reaction" of network founder Mark Zuckerberg:
"I founded Facebook on the idea that people want to share and connect with people in their lives, but to do this everyone needs complete control over who they share with at all times.
This idea has been the core of Facebook since day one. When I built the first version of Facebook, almost nobody I knew wanted a public page on the internet. That seemed scary. But as long as they could make their page private, they felt safe sharing with their friends online. Control was key. With Facebook, for the first time, people had the tools they needed to do this. That's how Facebook became the world's biggest community online. We made it easy for people to feel comfortable sharing things about their real lives.
We've added many new tools since then: sharing photos, creating groups, commenting on and liking your friends' posts and recently even listening to music or watching videos together. With each new tool, we've added new privacy controls to ensure that you continue to have complete control over who sees everything you share. Because of these tools and controls, most people share many more things today than they did a few years ago." said Zuckerberg in a statement.
He also announced that Facebook will create two new positions in management, assigned to Erin Egan and Michael Richter, who will further control the privacy and security of their products. Zukerberg's statement in its entirety can be found here, and details of the settlement agreement at this address.
