Displays: What's your type?
Technically speaking, the type of display in your phone is something you can't choose - its not mask of the mobile phone. However, in this short tutorial you will learn what you have know when you choose a phone, in the end - the most used (seen) element of the phone is - display.
Therefore, the most important characteristics of each display are:
- Type of matrix, or a way of making
- Viewing angle (the wider - the better)
- Response time (the quicker - the better, avoiding "ghost" effect)
- Power consumption (as less as possible - the better)
- Saturation and the "depth" of colors
- Sensitivity to the direct impact of light (looking outside).
No matter that we all like to have millions and millions of colors on the display, too much difference between a display with 260 thousand colors and some of the 16 million quite clear we will not notice, because the human eye can not distinguish between so many colors simultaneously. Display resolution plays a big role, but it does not depend directly on the type of display and features that we have mentioned - they depend on the hardware and software phone. However, it is well known that the resolution should be as much on each diagonal of the screen, because that content on the screen will not be in "cubes" and do not look like Super Mario from Nintendo in 1980. year.
The most popular matrix is still a TFT (thin film transistor). It has also been improved, cheaper version of LCD technology (Liquid Crystal Display) and a higher responsd speed, better color reproduction, it supports higher resolution and wider viewing angle. This type of display is still seen in all types of phones and tablets - those that cost 50 euros to the most expensive, with screens of 10 inches to the highest, even HD. TFT is very easy to fade on the sun, its contents become hard to read, although it has an active matrix, which guarantees brighter and sharper than passive matrix TFT and LCD which on the sun almost completely fade out. Active matrix, which is used in TFT LCD displays used since 1973. was made by Dr. T. Peter Brody in research for Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
Innovation in the field of display occurred with the introduction of OLED and AMOLED matrices, which are essentially the same, except that AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) has a unique way to control individual pixels on the display. AMOLED and OLED screens are increasingly being built into new phones, but are expensive and the process of making is more complicated in comparison to LCD technology. AMOLED screens have pixels that are almost light themselves, while the LCD matrix requires that they illuminate with the backlight.
- TFT and AMOLED display
The advantage of AMOLED displays compared to the LCD (TFT) are smaller energy consumption - longer battery life, thinner and more easily installed in all mobile devices that become even more thinner, have better sharpness, better contrast and brightness. What makes particularly difference is the black color, which is much more expressive and more saturated the AMOLED displays. Also, the viewing angle practically does not exist - from any position to watch this type of display you'll see clearly, without loosing colors and "destroying" the image. (AM) OLED screens have a 100 ~ 150 cd/m2 brighter image, allowing them the same amount of light to give brighter and clearer picture than TFT displays, which will not fade on the sun, as the earlier type of display.
